Do you want to make it in life? Or you want to know what to look for in people before making long term relationships with them?
If yes, you need to develop 13 essential traits. Or you need to look out for these 13 traits in people.
These 13 traits are not my own constructs. They were identified by Thomas Lombardo in his ground breaking research on future consciousness…
1) Self-awareness and Self-control
This is an under-rated trait. But it is the most important trait you must develop if you want to create your best self.
Self-awareness and self-control helps you achieve your long term goals.
Being self-aware means knowing yourself well enough. It means knowing what you can do and what you cannot do. The Nigerian slang, “no do pass yourself ,” captures this beautifully.
But you need to “know thyself”.
Self-control means saying no to people, events and ideas that doesn’t help you get closer to your goals.
If self-awareness means know thyself, self-control means hold yourself back from distractions.
To become self-aware, do a personal SWOT analysis. To develop more self-control, use Benjamin Franklin’s virtue chart.
2) The Pursuit of Excellence
Average people deliver average results. Sometimes they deliver shoddy results.
If you want to make it in life, you must have the courage to pursue excellence in whatever you do.
You must have the mindset of Jean Paul Sartre:
It is not enough to do well. I had to do better the whole timeJean Paul Sartre, Words...
People that will make it in life are keen on seeking out how to grow themselves.
This means that they hate to settle for less.
They read books, register and finish courses, attend seminars, listen to podcasts and take the leap to get a degree in a field they feel will help them.
Self-growth means consistently pushing yourself to grow and expand your mind…
4) The Skill and Love of Learning
The skill and love of learning is not about paper certificates or academic awards.
It refers to wonder, curiosity and the desire to find the truth behind events.
The skill and love of learning entails you having the humility to say you don’t know something, and seek out people, books, or events that can help you learn these concepts.
Loving to learn is a trait every person that will make it in life MUST have.
Without it, you will remain stagnant forever.
5) Critical Thinking
Critical thinking means careful thinking towards a goal.
it means you should be able to separate opinions from facts, to look at the evidence supporting opinions, and to accept or reject an opinion depending on how true or false the evidence supporting it is.
Critical thinking means you know when something doesn’t make sense, because you can hold two opposing ideas in your mind and think about them until you get to know which one makes sense.
Many people are believers, not critical thinkers. To make it in life, critical thinking can give you a lasting edge.
6) Visionary and Imaginative
Successful people throughout history share this trait.
Being visionary means you can see where the future is headed and take action.
Being imaginative means you can create a world that does not yet exist in your mind. Then make this world come alive so others can enjoy this world, too.
In his How to Get Rich Without Getting Lucky podcast, Naval says:
You need to make something people WILL want but does not yet know how to get. At scale
The operative word there is WILL. You need to be imaginative enough to know what people will want in the future.
People that will make it in life are often imaginative and visionary.
7) Cosmic Consciousness
People that will make it in life have this reverence for the supernatural.
They believe in Karma, justice, equity and fairness.
They have this sense of reciprocity: the measure you give is the measure you receive.
Such people will never cheat you out of your money, or harm you.
To them, do unto others as you would have them do unto you means something deep!
8) Hope, Courage and Optimism
If you live in Africa, you must have seen lots of people who have lost hope in life.
Victor Frankl in his book, Man’s Search for Meaning, talks about life becoming meaningless whenever we lose hope. And in no time death becomes the result.
People that will make it in life are filled with hope and optimism.
They believe that tomorrow will be better than today. They don’t let the negativity and pessimism flying around everywhere to get to them.
Goals and the courage to chase them makes you a person marked to succeed in the long run…
9) Love, Gratitude and Compassion
The Holy Book says: “Love thy neighbor as thyself”
If you want to start and run a business, you need to have love, gratitude and compassion for your customers.
This is the only way they’ll keep coming back to you. As humans, nothing moves us as much as someone who genuinely cares about us like themselves.
It’s the most seductive weapon.
10) Deep Purpose and Tenacity
Deep purpose implies you having a why to live.
Friedrich Nietzsche says:
Those who have a WHY to live can bear with almost any HOW.
People that will make it in life have a deep purpose. You can’t stay with them for a whole day without hearing them talk about their purpose in life.
This purpose is what propels them to keep pushing. And they have the tenacity or discipline to keep at it.
Rocky Balbao says:
It’s not about how hard you’re hit, but how hard you’can get hit and keep moving forward.
11) Practical Wisdom
The best way to understand practical wisdom is by way of an example.
Chike and Haruna are friends. After high school, Chike went to University to study entrepreneurship (a 4-year degree), while Haruna went to a technical college to study automation and mechanical repairs.
5 years later, Chike is roaming about the streets of Lagos looking for a N50,000 per month job. Haruna is an automation and welding contractor for several companies in Lagos. He has over 15 employees and is looking to employ Chike as an office assistant to file purchase orders and invoices.
Practical wisdom is about making choices that will help you live the life of your dreams, not sentimental choices that only give you bragging rights.
12) Creativity and Adventuresome Spirit
People that will make it in life are creative.
They know how to make new things that people want.
A most important skill is a sense of adventure.
They are bold enough to leave their comfort zone and take calculated risks.
This is what stands them out from the rest.
13) Balance and Temperance
Balance means a lot.
You don’t want to be an arsehole who all they think about is wealth or fame.
People that will make it in life create time to build solid relationships with the people that matter most: family.
Knowing when to stop is temperance.
The popular aphorism: “too much of everything is bad” is true.
Create balance in your life if you want to permanently make it in life…
